Life and Business are Good

Have you been listening to the news? I try not to these days, but I have heard lots of people refer to the “R” word. Recession.

Are you suffering financially? I mean really suffering, or are you just anticipating suffering?

I meet lots of people in the community. They have varied household incomes. The majority of us who are scared seem to be just anticipating suffering. That seems silly to me. It’s sunny outside today, my health is great, I have a roof over my head, and a thriving business with great clients. In the last two weeks I paid less than half of what I have been to fill up my gas tank for as far back as I can remember. It is awesome! That is money in my pocket each week I didn’t have before.

Sure, if you are swimming in debt then slow down your spending. Pay down your credit cards. Do take a look at your spending if it is frivolous. You should also invest in retirement and savings. Wait a second. Isn’t this the advice we always hear, even when we aren’t experiencing a declared recession?Perhaps things aren’t so bad after all. Negative energy has a way of soaking into our skin and making us feel miserable. Don’t let someone’s life experience affect how you feel. Turn off the television! Read a book, go for a hike, play a board game with a loved one, do something you enjoy. I think you will fast realize how good you really have it.

I am not participating in the recession and I suggest you don’t either. My client project load is heavier than it was a year ago. Homeowners are remodeling and redecorating their homes here in Portland from my perspective even more. It is almost as if staying at home more and vacationing less is making homeowners want to get their home looking great.

I ran into Jim and John from Tarala Floors at 7135 NE Freemont at the Oregon Remodeling Association meeting at Lamps Plus last month. They said the economy didn’t scare them a bit. Outdated flooring and countertops will still look ugly and people will want to do something about it – especially if they are staying home more and traveling less. I laughed when I heard their perspective. It is so true!

I encourage you to take a look at your life and ask yourself, “Is it really that bad?” I bet you have a lot to be thankful for! If you are worrying, vow to decide to be grateful for what you have. I promise you will begin to feel better immediately.
