A Gift From My Mother

Happy Thanksgiving! I am visiting my family in Indianapolis and working on a couple of design projects here in the Circle City.

Yesterday’s family feast was at Mom’s house. I call my mom the Martha Stewart of the Midwest. She is an exceptional cook, crafty, has great design sense, and is dangerous with a sewing machine. When I was an early teenager we moved into a new home. She allowed me to completely change my bedroom’s look. We picked the wall treatment (blue wallpaper with small flowers), a cream and brass daybed with trundle, and mauve Stainmaster carpet. (Hey! This look was HOT in the 80s!) Afterwards she took me to the fabric store and made window treatments, eyelet bedding, and a matching lampshade to coordinate with the wallpaper I selected.

My mother taught me early how important it was that the ‘client’ choose the look and feel of the space. She offered ideas and suggestions, but ultimately the decision of how to decorate my room was exclusively mine.

Mom still has a knack for home design. While her personal design sense differs from mine – somewhat formal and almost exclusively traditionally styled – she has always created beautiful homes. There is no doubt my love for home and well designed spaces started with the comforts she surrounded me with growing up. I am thankful to have such a talented woman as a mom.

Who did you visit on Thanksgiving? What gifts have they given you?

I have included a video of Mom’s tablescaping from yesterday’s Thanksgiving dinner. You will also catch my spirited, crazy family.
